4It's okay, but really just Baldur's Gate LiteSep 08, 2010
I only played through Icewind Dale because I heard that ID2 used the same rules used in Neverwinter Nights (a game I'm disappointed to admit I could never get into). I like the AD&D rules used for Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate. They're more restrictive, but I feel like I can get immersed in the characters I create this way, because the characters can't do anything that any class can do.

Icewind dale is different from Baldur's Gate in that it focuses much MUCH more on dungeon-crawling (there are like two towns in the game, and you're barely in them!), and you get to create your entire party. Both of these, I feel, detract from the experience. I loved wandering around towns in Baldur's Gate, visiting the shops, getting quests, doing the non-quest quests (walk into a bar and a group of thugs with nice equipment attack you, etc.). Icewind Dale does not have that. It's EXTREMELY linear, in that you just go from Dungeon A to B to C to town to D to E back to D to F to end of the game. I felt that it was just focused on fighting the entire time, rather than more on the story, the environment (lore, the NPCs in towns, etc.), and the characters.

The characters is what really weakens this game, as none of them have any sort of backstory. Unless you make one up for them. I guess ID is better than BG in that you can roleplay it more if you're creative, but I like having well-developed characters already there for me. I've never played DnD, and I would make a horrible Dungeon Master, so I like having the story and characters laid out for me, and then having the opportunity to explore them and see development.

So I prefer Baldur's Gate to Icewind Dale because I care more about the story and characters more than I do about the fighting (and I hate being in caves the whole game!). But Icewind Dale is still a very, very good, and very, very fun game. I can't comment on Icewind Dale 2 because I didn't play it, but if you liked Neverwinter Nights, then I heard it was similar.

5Blast from the past... in a good wayAug 17, 2010
Great game, the pace is good (fast but not too fast, very little needed downtime). It's perfect for people who want to spend a few hours a week running through a game.

1Awesome game if you don't mind the hidden adware it tries to installJul 11, 2010
I used to own the original version of this game, and I loved it. I was feeling nostalgic one day, so i looked it up here on Amazon, and decided to give this boxed set a try, since i couldn't find my original copies. The item shipped on time, great price, but when i went to play it, after installing it, McAfee popped up saying a potentially unwanted program-(adware-url.gen)was found in the install path of iwd. I know almost nothing about computers, but after mcafee removed the unwanted program, the game stopped playing at character creation. I tried reinstalling, and got the same thing. I guess the old saying"you get what you pay for" is true.

1doesn't work well at all!Jun 22, 2010
took two hours to get the first game to load, errors on the disk out the wazoo, and you have to install the first to get the rest of them. the first game when it did install, you couldn't do anything, every button you pushed, or anything you clicked shut down the game. the second game has no instructions, which i assume are in the first game that doesn't work. in short, if this game wasn't for my husband, who will play this game no matter what, i would have put it in the microwave and had more entertainment for a longer time.

1Doesn't work on modern computerJun 06, 2010
These games do not work on a modern computer. I can not start a game both games install fine and I get to the game menu but after that I get an error telling me "Can not connect to game session" when I am trying to play in single player. I get the same error message in both IWD and IWD2 I read some articles online, beacuse the readme has not been updated since 2000, and they suggest I have to roll back my direct X software, which I am unwilling to do. I also find it bothersome that the publisher did not bother to include the most recent patch which was released in 2000.

The package says it is compatable with Vista and XP. I am running Vista but my direct X is not compatable with this and the support for this product in nonexistatant.

Try the other IWD, IWD2 heart of winter on DVD. This product is published by [...] which seems to be a UK company and I am unsure if this is a UK product.
