First, let me say: I am a dummy.
Firewire is in fact faster than USB... however, an iPod Nano can not know this.
If I had taken the time to read the manual, I would have known that you can not sync an iPod Nano using Firewire. For some reason which I can not understand Apple does not allow this.
I was looking for a faster connection between my old Powerbook G4 and my Nano. It seems that the Powerbook is USB 1.something as it's noticeably slower than my iMac.
This collection of iPod accessories is better than I expected. The cables are generous in length and the connectors are good quality. The wall-wart is a nice looking and well made thing as well as the car power adapter. Overall this is good stuff.
I'm happy I have these things but if I had done my homework I probably wouldn't have bought this set. Not the set's fault... it's all on me. :)
