4A decent way to start off.Aug 06, 2005

This CD is primarily aimed for tourists and not for people who really wish to learn the German language. However, since I bought it for 1 cent(plus $2.49 S/H), it's a very good value.

The one thing about this CD is that it's somewhat short. I'm a true beginner(I didn't even know how to say "yes" in German) and it takes but maybe 4 or 5 full days to really complete this CD. The pictures help and the female and male pronunciation really helps. The only thing I wish was for their to be written pronunciation (ex: Nuen Uhr - noin oor).

The CD offers some "easy" and "hard" games for each of nine topics: Phrases, first words, food, shopping, countries, colors, time, numbers, and human body parts. However, from my experience the "hard" games are really not that hard. Maybe I'm smart or maybe the game wasn't that challenging, but who knows. One thing I do know is that this CD is a great compliment to my German book, since you often need to hear how words are pronunciated to speak and read it.

However, the CD does NOT cover stuff like grammar. So all the Umlaut(basically vowels with two dots on top of them) one encounters will be a bit vague. The CD does not cover anything about masculine, feminine, or neuter(neutral) nouns either. It also does not detail that such verbs like "do, do not, and don't" are not used in German.

The games are okay, not overly fun and such and the scoring system could use some tweaking. Although the CD does make use of a microphone, I don't have a mic so I can't see how much of a benefit it is for me, since the software checks you off that you finished the task anyways, regardless if you used the mic or not.

In the end, it's a good bargain for 1 cent. I mean, 1 friggin cent...you can find a penny on the street while you're drunk at night. Just remember, this is primarily for tourists, not necessarily for beginners who wish to know German in the long run. Just note that this CD does not prepare you for how the native German speakers will respond.

To learn basic words and their pronunciation - great for a penny.

Both a man and a woman take turns pronouncing the words - includes a picture, the German spelling and the English meaning. There are 9 categories - First Words, Food, Colors, Phrases, Body, Numbers, Time, Shopping, Countries. Each category has 4 activities: Easy game, Hard game, Word Practice, Speaking Practice, as well as option to print a picture dictionary.
